Listening to The Avett Brothers and Ringing in the New Year!

On New Year's Eve my roommate and I went to see The Avett Brothers. Good music, good times; the perfect way to ring in the New Year.

Before they took the stage a gentleman shook our hands and introduced himself as Jim Avett, the boys father. He asked if we had ever seen them play live before and I said that I this was my first live show of theirs. He told us that they were incredibly energetic and that we were in for a real treat. Then he let us in on a secret, that he would be singing the first of the encore songs with the boys, an old gospel song called "I Wanna Be Ready", with which my friend and I were familiar. He shook our hands again and thanked us so much for being there.

The show was amazing! Truly an amazing way of ringing in 2011. Their sister, Bonnie, joined in for a song as well.

Today, I was thinking about how encouraging Jim must have been of his children as they were growing up. Only meeting him for a few short moments, you could tell that he was definitely nurturing of his family's creativity and their pursuing of their art as their life's work.

For some of us, we have the privilege of having families that encourage and nurture our life's art, for others it is our friends. Having an encouraging community as you seek to step out in your creative adventures is absolutely necessary. If you don't already have that community, start taking steps to find someone like that in your life to encourage you in 2011 as you take those classes or buy that instrument that you have been wanting and sign up for lessons. I think to myself, this is my year, this is my life and I get to live it... same for you... this is your year, your life, nurture your art; nourish your creativity.
