Books for Discovering Your Creativity

The Artist's Way

The Artist's Way
by Julia Cameron is a book for anyone looking to get rid of their blocks and unleash their creativity. Some consider this the seminal work on the topic of nurturing creativity.

The Creative License: Giving Yourself Permission to Be the Artist You Truly Are

In this beautiful hand illustrated book, Danny Gregory tells his life story via his relationship with himself and drawing. He shares about his unfulfilled and uncreative but successful life as an exec. and how he came back to himself and to his life through the vehicle of drawing. Not only that, but he spends the rest of the book sharing how you can too!

The Spirit of Silence: Making Space for Creativity

I love this book. When I am in need of quiet, I remember this book and read from its pages. John Lane delves throughout history and geography to share with us examples of creatives who had a practice of silence, bringing them into their fullest creative selves. He shares with us why this worked for others and the ways in which we can seek out silence in our lives, as a way of truly being connected.

Books discussing the importance of creativity in our world today!

A Whole New Mind: Why Right-Brainers Will Rule the Future

In case you were doubting your investment of time in nurturing yourself in your art or your creative thinking skills, this book will convince you that it is a wise move to continue onward. Daniel Pink gives tangible examples of creativity in our changing world as being on of the most valuable commodities and most important investments we can make in our education.

Books for dealing with Creative Anxiety

Art & Fear: Observations on the Perils (and Rewards) of Artmaking

Art & Fear talks about the artistic process and how often discouragement and fear keep much art from being made. It really made me feel like I was not alone when I was struggling with my art practice, realizing that other artists have fear about their work and concern about the direction of their work. It is almost a relief to learn that the biggest obstacle you face is yourself!

The War of Art

This is a non-fiction offering from the author of The Legend of Bagger Vance, Steven Pressfield, as he talks about his lifelong struggles with Resistance. He speaks about Resistance in such a way so we can start understanding why we are not getting down to work, get frustrated with those facts and gain the tools to overcome! Yes, Resistance is real and this book helps you stop making excuses and get down to work.

Mastering Creative Anxiety: 24 Lessons for Writers, Painters, Musicians & Actors from America's Foremost Creativity Coach

This is a truly unique book from Eric Maisel. He uses teaching tales to show our run-ins with Creative Anxiety. He operates from the premise that creativity is necessary and healthy to an abundant life, but that engaging with it will bring about inevitable anxiety which needs to be managed to continue on and he offers excellent solutions for doing so!
