Kick it

I am always on the search for new and creative solutions to problems. One of my most favorite sayings is from author, Dan Miller, "Don't look for either/or solutions, look for 'and' solutions". I guess the point is, don't box yourself into either being stuck or being stuck, darned if-you-do/darned if-you-don't kind of thing. Look for the "and" solution.

Sometimes we do have real limitations, but often times our limitations are of our own making, the worst of all, the limitations in our heads. Between our own two ears we trip ourselves up and hold ourselves back. Sometimes you've just gotta have the audacity to do exactly what it is you want to do, rather than chose to remain stuck.

Here is a random example of one of the creative solutions I've seen recently.

Just right.
Just in case you feel your eyes are deceiving you, yes, that is an artist kicking his art around on a gravel drive way.

The other day I asked my friend, Jon Graham , how he achieved such lovely and organic textures in his paintings. He informed me that while the primer for his panels was still wet, he would take them outside and kick them around in the gravel. So I watched as this occurred. It was pretty fun and definitely not a solution you would hear of most artists using. No wonder the textured surfaces of his work have such an interesting quality! I would say, that in this case, choosing a new and different solution, was the way to go. This is just one example, but maybe, if you feel stuck, just figure out what it is that would be your "kick it"!
