"When my daughter was about seven years old, she asked me one day what I did at work. I told her I worked at the college- that my job was to teach people how to draw. She stared at me, incredulous, and said 'You mean they forget?'" -Howard Ikemoto, taken from "The Creative License" I just recently picked this book up and I absolutely love each and every single page!
In "The Creative License", Danny Gregory writes and draws about creativity as an intrinsic part of being human. He brings us back to our childhood when all of us were creative powerhouses; building with blocks, drawing and painting with no reserve, pretending and playing for hours on end. He then shares about what happens after, when we become adults and get a little too practical to do or to make any of the things we truly desire. He shares his own personal journey away from creativity during college and into a job for twenty plus years which sucked the life, energy and creativity out of him. He then explores his journey back to creativity; how he turned to his six year old self again and began visual journaling. The more he drew, the more free he felt. The more he began to see life and the world as an exciting place of beauty, wonder and experience. He then goes on in the rest of the book to draw and write and quote other inspirational creatives, teaching how you too can draw by fighting the enemy of perfectionism and seeing things anew and utilize this as a tool to newfound creative freedom. I will be wrecking a brand new sketch book with each and every drawing exercise in this book, hope you choose to do the same.
