So, today I was working on the cover of my Sketchbook Project sketchbook. I shared with you a bit ago that I was participating in this cool project that was started by Art House Co-op in Brooklyn, NYC. It is a massive, international and on-going sketchbook project for anyone who desires to sketch and participate. Here is the informative video in case you want more details or want to join in for the next round! Anyhow, I am very excited about how my sketchbook is coming along and I cannot wait to share with you some photos very soon. The post mark due date is quickly approaching for me to finish and drop my sketchbook in the mail, so I have been working on it a little more diligently recently. Nothing like a good deadline to get your butt in gear! Back to the gauze...
So I was using an X-Acto Knife to cut this extra thick paper that I am using for the cover. I was using a ruler to give me a clean edge and everything was going just like I learned back in the day at art school... until.. a little slip and a skip and onto the top of my finger it went. It was a new X-Acto blade so the cut was incredibly clean, I hardly felt anything at first. The blood that started to pour from my fingernail was a much clearer warning sign to step away from the work table with all of my precious pages on it's surface! The first rule of art is, "No blood must drip on the art project unless it fits into the theme!" Second, I ran to the bathroom for emergency paper towels. Third, I went next door to the restaurant in my studio building, as I know all restaurants are required to have first-aid kits and asked for some gauze and tape. So the finger is wrapped, the art is safe and so am I; at least for today. The whole time I was having flash backs to my freshman year of art school and Design101 class with our professor assigning us project upon project using an X-Acto knife to cut up little black squares of paper into a multitude of different designs to hammer into our very beings the principles and elements of design. He always joked about that class being a magnet for freshman art major X-Acto injuries. I prided myself on not being one of them. But today, alone in my grown-up artist studio (whatever that means) I slipped up with the X-Acto knife and now every time I type an "F" it comes out as "G" because of the fat wad of gauze protecting my minor injury. Humility and humor are ever linked. Thankfully, I like them both.
